Carl Allen Smith, Sr., age 75, of McArthur, passed away Friday, June 26, 2026, at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was born February 12, 1951 in Sutton, West Virginia, to the late James Richard Smith and Verna Amanda Blankenship Smith. Carl worked as a coal miner for 27 years and was a member of the UMWA Local #1857. Whether it be mowing, working in his flower gardens, coon hunting, fishing, or bow hunting, he loved being outdoors. Carl was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially chasing the grandchildren and taking them rides on the tractor. In years past, he attended Log Pile Church of Christ in Christian Union. Carl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maxine Perry Smith, whom he married on March 4, 1972; children, Mary Betts and Carl Allen “Bub” Smith, Jr. (Bobbie Jo); special nephew, Jamie Smith; grandchildren, Nathan Betts (Rachel), Garrett Betts (Jenny), Skylar Betts (Joe Swaim), JP Jamison, Blake McCathern (Katie Clowes) and Kylie Smith; great-grandchildren, Katie, Emmett, Maverick, Jase, Luke, Zander and soon to be Maddyn; brothers and sister, Jerry Coombs, Albert Smith, James E. Smith, Sr. and Regena Smith, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by brothers, Jimmie Coombs, Jim Smith, Larrie Coombs and Johnnie Smith; sisters, Irene Armentrout and Mildred Flint; and special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marletta “Jakie” and Merle Betts. The family would like to thank the staff at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe for their excellent care of Carl. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mark Rosser officiating.
