Obituary

Carles E. Prater, age 83 of Dundas, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023, at his home. He was born September 1, 1939, in Prater Fork Kentucky to the late Melvin and Pearlie (Hale) Prater. Carles graduated from McArthur High School and moved to Columbus where he met and married his soul mate, Martha (Walker) Prater, with whom he shared over 62 years of marriage, who survives. Carles was a devoted truck driver by trade, owning and operating his own rig that proudly displayed the names of his daughters, and driving for several other companies with retiring from the Dallas Mavis company in Chillicothe. Carles was loved by many throughout his life travels. He enjoyed keeping up with old school mates, having family Christmas's with our Special Santa and going to family gatherings at the Hale family place. Holding special places in his heart was his Reffett kids. Carles was also an avid NASCAR and Cincinnati Bengals fan. Besides his wife Martha, Carles is also survived by his daughters: Carlotta Hensler, Sherry Prater Saunders, and Pam Prater Ward; grandchildren: Sarah (Adam) Crotzer, Marty Saunders, Raymond Hensler, Carles Paul (Grace Hoffman) Metcalf, Jessica (Daniel) Davis, Bobbie Jo (Charlie Reed) Saunders and Georganna (Justin Hamlin) Saunders, as well as 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Glendon Prater; step-siblings, Larry Slone, Ada Temple and Lana Woodman; and Brenda and Bruce Prater who were always a phone call away. Besides his parents, Carles was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, Rick Hensler, Bob Saunders, and Scotty Ward; brothers, Troy James, Billy Joe and Harles. Lastly, Annajane Reffett the woman that his only one date with turned into his best friend and the sister he never had. The Prater family is very grateful to have Michael and Megan Jones and their boys in their lives as we don't know what Dad and Mom would have done without you. Calling hours will be Sunday, March 12th, from 12 to 2 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  An Eagles service by McArthur Lodge #2279 will be held at the beginning of the funeral service starting at 2 p.m. Rev. Jerry Griffith and Rev. Jim Taylor will officiate the funeral service. Burial will be in the Elk Cemetery in McArthur. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com.
