Obituary

Carrie I. Holtz Powell, age 97 of Charleston, SC, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, March 4, 2025.  She passed into the arms of her loving Savior while at home surrounded by many of her family.  Carrie was born July 12, 1927 in Wellston, Ohio to the late Raymond and Elsie Holtz. She attended Wellston High School and owned and operated the Upholstery Shop in McArthur with her husband Norman for many years before retiring.  Carrie was a faithful member of Puritan Freewill Baptist Church in Hamden where she served as church secretary.  Carrie enjoyed camping, fishing, and one of her favorite pastimes was the many yearly trips she and Norman, along with other family members, took to Canada. While there she became quite the expert camper. She also enjoyed taking along her grandchildren to share in her camping adventures, both to Canada and to Pine Lake. Many great stories have been shared around the table recalling these special times.  Carrie also had the ability to make beautiful quilts. She made several quilts for many family members.  Carrie and Norman married on May 18, 1974 and they would have celebrated 51 years of marriage this year. As for the many who know Carrie and Norman, you would rarely see one without the other.  Carrie will be missed by her daughter Jeannette Canode of Charleston, SC, and son Dale (Jeanne) Leach of Dover, OH; grandchildren Gary (Cassie) Bowden, Brian Bowden, Matthew (Stephanie) Bowden, Rob (Michele) Canode, Janet (Chad) Ward, Bruce (Melissa) Leach, Mark (Abby) Leach, Carrie (Bill) Ruegsegger, Stagerlee (Missy) Beabout, and Katie Perry. Carrie also leaves behind several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Carrie was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Dale Leach in 1969,  her husband of 48 years Norman Powell, two brothers, Danny Holtz and Carl Holtz, and sisters Beulah Morrow and Kay Lucas. Also preceding her in death are daughters Jeannine Bowden and Annetta Kay Beabout, stepson Kenneth Powell, sons-in-law Joe Canode and Allen Beabout, granddaughter Melissa Gilliland, and grandson Kenneth Powell Jr.  The family will greet guests on Sunday, March 9th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 2:00 PM. with her grandson Pastor Stagerlee Beabout officiating.  Burial will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
