Edward Charles "Ed" Heinlein, age 88, of Hamden, and a former resident of Rochester, New York and Palm Bay, Florida, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Four Winds Community in Jackson, Ohio. He was born November 15, 1936 in Rochester, New York, son of the late Aloysius Heinlein and Mary Bopp Heinlein. Ed retired from, and was a member of, the International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a work-oriented person who loved keeping busy. Over the years, Ed enjoyed working as a mechanic, restoring vehicles, and he had a passion for dirt track racing. He is survived by his children, Bonnie VanGelder, Pam Knoeferl, Liz Brown, Darlene Grace, Richard Heinlein (Gwen), Rodney Heinlein, Robbin Kapriotti (Peter), Rory Heinlein, and Belinda McDermott; sister, Sharon Hafner, along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wives, Florence and Carol Ann; son, Randy Heinlein; granddaughter, Sara Lopez; brothers, Frankie Heinlein and James Heinlein; and sister, Mary Ann Rotoli. In keeping with Ed's wishes, cremation followed his passing. Arrangements are under the direction of the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.
