Obituary

Eleanor M. Peterson, 95, of Wellston, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home,  after nearly 4 very pleasant years.  Eleanor was born on September 11, 1929, in Whiting, Indiana, during the Great Depression.   She was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School in Hammond, Indiana.  While raising her family of five, Eleanor also graduated from Calumet College.  Eleanor married Bob Peterson on May 17, 1953.  After Bob's military service the family returned to Northwest Indiana, then in 1977 they moved to Avon Lake, near Cleveland.  In 1984, they settled in Jackson and became members of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and School in Wellston. They loved everything about it, especially the school where they were teachers' aides for twenty years.  After retiring, Bob and Eleanor became active with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. For over 20 years, the two of them devoted countless hours of volunteer time, planning and building homes, for first time home buyers of Jackson and Vinton counties.  Eleanor's prior experience as bank teller qualified her for the job of bookkeeper and financial secretary.  She was a very organized person, so the job was a perfect fit.  She also loved to travel, which included camping while she was raising her children.  Later in life, Eleanor and Bob traveled by planes, trains, buses, riverboats and cruise ships.  They settled in Florida in their remaining winters and became snowbirds.  Eleanor grew up in a self-sufficient home and learned to cook and sew at a young age.  She had a long list of hobbies which included sewing, counted cross stitch, gardening, reading mysteries, playing Bunco, landscaping and golf.  Eleanor also enjoyed dogs, including raising miniature schnauzers, bird watching, clipping coupons and walking around Lake Alma with her friends.  She was a proud member of The Jackson Lioness Club.  Eleanor led a purposeful, goal oriented and self-disciplined life.  She never lost sight of her objectives.  She loved her family dearly, which showed through her words and actions each day of her life. She is survived by her son, Mark; grandson J.T; granddaughters, Jennifer and Whitney; daughter in law, Sonya Peterson; brother, Robert Feeney (Helen); as well as "oodles" of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mary Janisina Feeney; her loving husband Robert Peterson; daughter, Cathy Thomas; and son David.  Eleanor chose to be a gleeful, willing and curious participant in life.  Seldom a spectator, she made the most of every minute she was given.  She will join her parents and husband at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Hammond Indiana for her final resting place.   Arrangements are under the direction of the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com.
