Emmitt H. "Pete" Smith, Jr., age 50, of Wellston, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2023, at The Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born June 29, 1972 in Gallipolis, Ohio, son of the late Emmitt H. Smith, Sr. and Dora M. Hunter Smith. Emmitt graduated in 1990 from Wellston High School and went on to be a laborer in the construction field. He loved cooking and also enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR, and cheering for The Ohio State Buckeyes. Emmitt is survived by his aunts, Mary Young and Charlotte Hubbard; siblings, Roxanna Riegel (Derrick), Peggy Newman (Shane), and John Smith (Megan); along with several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Bernice Hunter, paternal grandparents, Harley and Eliza Woltz; aunts and uncles, Charles A. Hunter, Betty and Sam Wilt, and Maggie and Walter Malone; as well as the love of his life, Mary Thacker. Calling hours and funeral service will be held privately for the family only at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
