Garry Lee Mercer, age 82, of McArthur, passed away Friday, June 7, 2024, at his home. He was born March 15, 1942 in Vinton County, Ohio, son of the late Robert G. Mercer and Alma Claradene Tatman Mercer. Garry was a 1959 graduate of Allensville High School. Starting at the young age of 15, Garry was an employee of Mercer Lumber and Trucking in McArthur for 51 years until his retirement in 2008. He was raised on a farm and continued his love for the outdoors throughout his life. Garry was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed working on cars, and he loved attending the Vinton County Air Show. He was a member of the family of God and always enjoyed going to his cabin at the Wellston Church Camp. Above all, his proudest achievement was his family. He was a great family man and showed his love to all. Garry is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Jean McLain Mercer; daughters, Connie Mercer and Carolyn Mercer, both of McArthur; grandchildren, Kelly Covey (Greg) of McArthur, and Lesley Eldridge (Heath) of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Ashlynn Canode, Easton Canode (Trinity), Kaden Covey, and Hutchison Eldridge; great-great grandson, Oakley Canode; brother, Roger Mercer (Vonda) of McArthur; along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Betty Pinkerton; brothers, Paul, Vernon and Gerald Mercer; and niece and sparring partner, Wendy Mercer. Calling hours will be Tuesday, June 11th, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 1 p.m. with Rev. Roger Hauck officiating.
