January 8, 1942 – February 8, 2025
Herbert D. Childers, age 83, of Wellston, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025, at OSU East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He was born January 8, 1942 in Huddy, Kentucky, son of the late William and Lucille Brown Childers. Herb was a proud veteran of the United States Army who served during the Vietnam era. He was a "Jack of all trades" who was a carpenter, welder, and mechanic, just to name a few. Herb enjoyed flint knapping and making replicas of Indian artifacts, tinkering around on anything, and spending time with his family. He had a strong Christian faith, and he loved his Lord. Herb is survived by his children, Mike Childers, John Childers, and Kelli Childers; grandchildren, Braydon Childers, Maddie Childers, and Presley Childers; brother, Al Childers; sister-in-law, Maxine Jacobs; bonus family, Amanda and Gabe Simmonds; special friend, Gary, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Wanda Slavens Childers, May 22, 2024; and siblings, William "Bud" Childers, Joy Drabik, Genevieve Kornish, Alice Ann Childers, John Childers and Paul Childers. Calling hours will be Wednesday, February 12th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 1 p.m. with Pastor Steve Mathews officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Log Pile Cemetery.
