Icy May (Gibbs) Fast Sayre, age 96, of Wellston, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023, at Jenkins Care Community in Wellston. She was born June 20, 1926 in Mason County, West Virginia, daughter of the late Joseph Z. Gibbs and Nancy Rebecca Morning Gibbs. May was the last of her family. Her parents passed away when she was young, and her older sisters took care of the family until they were raised. May lived in Gallipolis, Ohio when growing up and then later went to Columbus to find work. For many years she worked at Ben Franklin Tuberculosis Hospital as a switchboard operator, where she made many lifelong friends. In later years, May worked at various retail stores. While in Columbus she had many friends who have since passed away. In the 1980's, May moved back to Wellston to be closer to family. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Jackson, where she attended when she was able. May loved to cook, crochet, and make crafts for many years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pauletta and Ron Cheatwood; grandson, Thomas (Chelsea) Rogers, who was her pride and joy. She loved watching him grow up and going to all his activities and having family dinner on Sunday. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ansley and Aden Rogers, whom she adored. May leaves many wonderful memories. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Sayre; and sisters and brothers, Cora, Alice, Opal, Joe, Henry, and Freda and Homer Chamberlain, with whom she lived with in her younger years. Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 26th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Thursday, April 27th, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor John Michles and Chaplain Harry Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
