Jackie Joann Shepherd, age 80, of Wellston, was called home Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson, Ohio, surrounded by her family.  She was born on August 30, 1945, in Ashland, Kentucky , to the late Lon William "Pete" Maddox and Mary Jane LeBrun Maddox.  The past year consisted of many health challenges, but Jackie persevered. She was able to spend her last month at home doing things she enjoyed, including celebrating her birthday with family. She was a member of Log Pile Church and loved the Lord. She had tremendous love for her family, flowers, and animals, particularly her favorite cat, Lincoln.  Jackie had a sweet tooth, and you could always find her at the dessert table.  Jackie graduated from Wellston High School with the class of 1963. She worked several jobs in Wellston, but her passion was nursing. She was part of the first Holzer School of Nursing graduating class at the University of Rio Grande in 1982.  She then went on to be the first director of nursing at Four-Winds Nursing Home. She then continued her career at Adena Medical Center.  After an injury she became inactive but kept her nursing license up to date. Jackie is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Fred Shepherd; children, Fred Wayne Shepherd (Debbie), Michele Shepherd (Steve Bennett), and Todd Shepherd (Billie); grandchildren, Loretta Jacqueline "L.J." Shepherd, Randy Hagen, Brianna Shepherd, and Andrew Shepherd; great-grandson Jacob Cruse; sister, Pam Castor (Bud); brother, Gary Maddox (Molly), along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by her sisters Bonnie, Mary, and Linda. The family would like to give special thanks to Holzer Hospice and Medical Staff for their care and compassion. Calling hours will be Wednesday, September 10, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will be Thursday, September 11, at 11 a.m. with Pastors Don Fairchild and Jim McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in the Byer Cemetery.
