Melvin D. Smith, age 53, of Jackson, passed away Monday, February 19, 2024, following a lengthy illness. He was born October 5, 1970 in Gallipolis, Ohio, son of the late Melvin Mays and Daisy Faye Hall Staten. Melvin graduated from Wellston High School with the class of 1989. He was an employee of Jerry's Do It Center in Wellston, as well as a self-employed contractor. Melvin was a caring and funny guy who was called "grumpy bear" by his grandkids. He enjoyed playing golf, watching sports of all kinds, and being the #1 fan of the Cleveland Browns. He always looked forward to playing in the co-ed baseball league in the summer and participating in the WHS alumni baseball tournaments. He was a member of Amvets Post 84 of Jackson, Sons of American Legion Post 371 of Wellston; V.F.W. Post 8402 in Jackson and attended the V.F.W. Post 9092 in Wellston. Melvin is survived by his daughters, Jordan Breanna Bales (Michael), Danielle Smith, Leah Smith, and Carri Anna Potts; grandchildren, Jayden Bales, Mariah Bales, Aaliyah Rusk, Connor Swain, Bayleigh Merrill, Remington McClaskey, and Winstyn Liedy; companion, Jeannette Burgoon; siblings, Linda Markin, Kenny Smith, Grant Smith, Leon Smith, Kevin Smith, and Kenny Kelly; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Fran Vickers; brothers, Jack Mays, Mike Webb, Melvin "Maliki" Mays, and Richard Markin; and niece, Bobbi Jo Duncan. Calling hours will be Saturday, February 24th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Funeral service will follow the calling hours at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Fulton, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Curry Cemetery. In honor of Melvin being the Cleveland Browns #1 fan, the family requests that Cleveland Browns attire be worn to the service.
