Obituary

Nancy Karen McCarley, age 65, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home following a brief illness on Friday, December 22, 2023.  Nancy was born in Charleston, West Virginia on September 7, 1958, to Edith Arlene (Tawney) Phillips and the late James Basil Phillips of Elkview, West Virginia.  Nancy attended Herbert Hoover High School in Elkview, WV and later attended Marshall University on an athletic track scholarship.  She met her husband, Ronald E. "Rick" McCarley, at Marshall University, and they were wed September 2, 1978.  They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Eric, who filled her life with wonder and purpose.  Following 25 years of employment, Nancy retired from OPHTEC USA, an ophthalmic medical research company located in Boca Raton, Florida, where she worked in accounting and as a national trade meeting coordinator.  She loved traveling around the US and Europe seeking a better understanding of our world and felt blessed to have experienced living in numerous US cities as well as in Groningen, The Netherlands.  Nancy loved watching and participating in all sports, but especially liked watching Marshall, WVU and Ohio State college football.  She was also the matriarch of numerous generations of Monarch Butterflies, which became her hobby after retirement.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ronald E. "Rick" McCarley; daughter, Michelle L. McCarley Romani (Dustin) of Pompano Beach, FL; son, Eric S. McCarley of Boca Raton, FL; mother, E. Arlene Phillips of Elkview, WV, brothers, James B. Phillips (Terri) of Warner Robins, GA, and Keith E. Phillips (Ailene) of Elkview, WV; brother-in-law, Michael McCarley (Melanie) of Virginia Beach, VA; sisters-in-law, Dana Hochgraf (Scott) of Northwood, NH, and Karen Smith (Pat Gallivan) of Wellston, OH, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.  She was proceeded in death by her father, J. Basil Phillips; her younger brother, Danny Phillips; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mack McCarley, Jr. and Marjorie Ann Leach McCarley.

Nancy's funeral service will be held at Hafer Funeral Home in Elkview, WV.  Private interment will be in the Ridgewood Cemetery in Wellston, OH.  In lieu of flowers, please donate on her behalf to The Monarch Butterfly and Pollinators Conservation Fund at nfwf.org.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com.
