Norma
Barr
October 28, 1931 – April 20, 2025
Norma Jean Barr, age 93, of Jackson, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on April 20, 2025. She was born on October 28, 1931, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. A devoted Christian, Norma studied the Bible daily and lived her faith through kindness, compassion, and service. She received a bachelor's degree in early education from Ohio University. Norma was especially proud of her role in the development of the Milton Day Care Center, where her work impacted countless families throughout the community. Norma married the love of her life, Dewey Barr, in 1950 and spent a beautiful 52 years together. They shared a passion for travel and never knew a stranger. They treasured time spent with friends in Mesa, AZ and created a lifetime of warm memories. The biggest pride and joy of Norma and Dewey were their children, Gene, Melody, and Otto, along with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They cherished every moment spent with their loved ones, creating a legacy of love and togetherness. Norma taught swimming lessons to numerous children and adults over the years — a calling she deeply valued. She lovingly kept a personal journal of those she taught, honoring each individual she helped. She was an avid tennis player, who loved the game and played regularly, well into her later years, finding both joy and fellowship on the court. She was a passionate game player who found great joy in gathering with family and friends to play and connect with. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Barr; her parents, McClellan "Clell" Everett Gain and Thelma Marie Jones Gain; her siblings, Charles Everett Gain, Jack Gain, and Betty (Gain) McClary; and former son-in-law, John Channell. Norma is survived by her sisters, Dottie (Gain) Dunbar and Barbara (Gain) Lemieux. She is also survived by her children, Gene (Patti) Barr, Melody (Dennis) Austin, and Otto (Camie) Barr; her grandchildren, Lee, Martha (Ty), Kimberly (Patrick), Ottie (Cynthia), and Eli (Caitlin); and her great-grandchildren, Harmony, Charlotte, Joshua, Eliana, and Eli Dewey Dean (lovingly known as "Little Dew"). Norma will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her loving spirit, and the joy she brought into the lives of everyone she knew. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 3rd, at 5 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Wellston with Minister Irving Everson officiating. Private burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Jackson. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that any donations in Norma's memory be made to the Church of Christ, 201 North Minnesota Ave. Wellston, Ohio 45692. Arrangements are under the direction of the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com.
