Virginia “Doris” Burke, 91, of South Rockwood, Michigan, passed away May 30, 2026, in Carleton, Michigan, of natural causes. Doris was born December 25, 1934 in Speight, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Millis Johnson, Sr. and Kelsie Johnson. Doris was a graduate of Jackson High School, in Jackson, Ohio, where she was a member of the Jackson High cheerleading squad.
Doris was known for her love of gardening, fashion, bluegrass music, and family. Her home flower beds were always beautiful and abound with colorful petunias and marigolds. Her friends and family knew her to be stylish. She always looked her best, no matter the occasion. Her love of clogging and music festivals was apparent. She was a skilled clogger. An excellent cook, Doris enjoyed preparing meals for her family. Her fried chicken, homemade pies, and breaded fried crappie, caught in Lake Barkley, Kentucky, were family favorites.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband Kermit R. Burke, Sr, her sisters Marcella Tackett and Sally Cardwell, and brothers Millis “Junior” Johnson, Perry Johnson, Stanley Johnson, and grandson J. Kyle Cassani.
Doris is survived by three children, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three brothers. Surviving children are: Diana L. Schalk (Calvin), Kermit R. Burke, Jr. (Robin), and Daphne C. Cassani (Greg). Surviving grandchildren are: Calvin W. Schalk, Jr. (Janel), Charles N. Schalk (Carrie), J. Cole Schalk (Emily), Kermit R. Burke III, Michala R. Root (Daniel), Morgan B. Bitterman (Chad), Cameron J. Cassani (Haylie), and Maverick E. Cassani. Surviving great grandchildren are: Charlotte E. Schalk, Jason C. Schalk, Kayzlea E. Cassani, Carsten K. Cassani, Haiden M. Cassani, and Peyton M. Bitterman. Surviving brothers are: Rollo Johnson, Omar Johnson, and James Johnson.
Visitation will be at McWilliams Funeral Home, 125 East First Street, Wellston, Ohio 45692 on Friday, June 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, June 6, at McWilliams Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor John Mark Ballenger. Internment at Salem Cemetery, Township Road 176, Wellston, Ohio 45692, will follow completion of the service. After the internment, a luncheon will be hosted by family at God’s Country Venue, 5416 Riegel Ridge Rd., Oak Hill, OH 45656.
Doris’ grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: Calvin Jr., Charles, Cole, Kermit III, Daniel, and Maverick.
